Give Your Creatives a Break

An interactive designer, working in a Boston-area agency, will log easily 55 to 65 actual, office hours and countless additional hours planning and trying to get ahead. As an interactive designer who has put my time in at big agencies, I tell you, we do it to ourselves. Think about it. The more hours you put in to make something awesome, the more your boss is going to expect it. We're constantly pushing the boundaries between doing more in less time and creativity, contrary to popular belief, is not an infinite resource. Read More »

Perhaps this has happened to you. You work hard to get a relationship with a client. They throw you a bunch of work. One project leads to another and over the course of a half a year, you're feeling pretty damn good about what you're able to accomplish. The checks come on time. You're proud to call them your client. Ready to share your work with the big wide world, you write up a blog-post. You share the link with the client—you know, to do the right thing—and then the heartbreak comes. You get DENIED. What can you do? Read More »

We just launched Cyfac Custom configurator.

In the summer of 2011 a college buddy—and kick-ass designer—Daniel Luzier and I teamed up with William Grand from Grand Interactive to build a custom configurator for the French road bike manufacturer Cyfac. Daniel had a previous relationship with the company being that he was an avid cyclist himself. He knew the client and knew his product well. Jointly we surveyed the competitors and presented storyboards around the usability experience. Every client is different and being this client loves design as much as his product, my storyboards added graphic interpretation yet stayed primarily focused on illustrating the user flow. The pitch was a success! From there all we needed to do was build on the flavor of the storyboards and enhance the design elements during the design stage. How about that for a concept. First round of designs produced a winner. Milestone met. From there Daniel and William flushed out the designs and production was complete. Viola. Off to the races. See the site!

My career at Digitas afforded many a great project, but the Tide project was a full-blown interactive video experience. More details to come.

Maybe it was the discovery of a band, a show, movie or that something that re-calibrates your understanding of the world. For me it was the confluence of post-punk music and 20th century surrealism—specifically the album art of Vaughan Oliver. Read More »
